Pilot initiative aims to catalyse large-scale transition from diesel to electric boats for a cleaner and more sustainable Ganga riverfront
Varanasi, June 5, 2026: The Dharampal Satyapal Group (DS Group), a leading FMCG conglomerate and multi business corporation, in partnership with IX Energy, has successfully piloted the conversion of a 25-seater diesel boat into an electric boat and will inaugurate the vessel on World Environment Day in Varanasi. The initiative aims to facilitate collaboration with government departments and other stakeholders to promote the large-scale conversion of diesel boats to electric boats in the city.
The initiative has been conceptualized with the objective of aiding collaboration among government authorities, industry stakeholders, and the local boat operator community to accelerate the large-scale adoption of electric boats in Varanasi. By replacing diesel-powered boats with electric alternatives, the project seeks to reduce air, water and noise pollution, improve the experience of pilgrims and tourists, and contribute towards a cleaner and more sustainable riverfront ecosystem.

The electric boat is equipped with a 35 kWh battery, electric motor, gearbox and associated systems. On a full charge, it can travel approximately 80–85 kilometres, including operations against river currents, or complete 3–4 rounds between Assi Ghat and Namo Ghat.
Beyond environmental benefits, the initiative also offers significant economic advantages for the Mallah community by reducing fuel expenses and operating costs. To support adoption, charging-related concerns have been addressed through the installation of charging points at key ghats and the provision of long charging cables for convenient battery charging.
The initiative builds on DS Group’s longstanding commitment to preserving the cultural and environmental heritage of Varanasi. Through the Dharampal Satyapal Foundation, the Group maintains six ghats in the city—Chait Singh Ghat, Shivala Ghat, Mahanirvani Ghat, Guleria Ghat, Niranjani Ghat and Dandi Ghat.
